Always keep a backup somewhere else
Not my loss, but reported two weeks ago in NZ Herald:
Student working on thesis, makes final amendments to thesis, puts diskette into laptop (prior to final save) - diskette is only copy apart from that on laptop HDD. Leaves room for celebratory comfort break.
Returns to find laptop and diskette have disappeared.
Reportedly offers rest of laptop (carry-bag, power supply, mouse. modem etc) to thief in return for the diskette itself.
Three years work gone.
