Tao Of Backup Wailing Wall Story
Always MAKE SURE you're getting every filesystem!
(names removed to protect the innocent)
I was in charge of backups at a university department. I was
backing up 150 unix machines, approximately 350 filesystems.
However, one slipped through the cracks. It happened to contain
a Professor's home directory, containing his research for the
past two years. Needless to say, that particular disk failed.
Sending the disk to a data recovery specialist produced nothing.
The platters were damaged beyond recovery, and there was no hope.
Most of his work was duplicated in his student's directories
(which were being backed up), but his email and personal files
were completely gone.
